Generating Topologically Correct Schematic Maps

چکیده

This paper studies the creation of schematic maps from traditional vector-based, carto-graphic information. An algorithm is proposed to modify positions of lines in the original input map with the goal of producing as output a schematic map that meets certain geometric and aesthetic criteria. Special emphasis is placed here on preserving topological structure of features during this transformation. The known, existing methods for preserving topol-ogy during map transformation generally involve computing several constrained Delaunay triangulations Mol89, Gol94, JBW95, Rua95]. The algorithm proposed here computes a transformation which preserves topological relations among linear features using simple geometric operations and tests.

A Survey on Automated Metro Map Layout Methods

We give a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in automated metro map layout. A large number of algorithms for computing metro maps have been developed over the last 10– 15 years by researchers in computer science and related fields. In this survey, we distinguish three subtasks of generating metro map layouts (schematic network layout, label placement, crossing minimization) and give...

Automated schematic map production using simulated annealing and gradient descent approaches

Generating schematic maps are an effective means of generalization of large scale network datasets. The aim is to enhance visualization at line networks and also make them user friendly for interpretation. The basic steps for generating schematic maps are to eliminate all features and networks (or portions of networks) that are not functionally relevant to the network system chosen for mapping....

On Generating Topologically Correct Isosurfaces from Uniform Samples

data visualization, three dimensions, isosurfaces A function f(x,y,z) of three variables may be visualized by examining its isosurfaces f(x,y,z) = t for various values of t. To display these isosurfaces on a graphics device it is desirable to approximate them with piecewise polygonal surfaces that are (1) geometrically good approximations, (2) topologically correct, and (3) consist of a small n...

Computerized mappings of the cerebral cortex: a multiresolution flattening method and a surface-based coordinate system.

We present a new method for generating two-dimensional maps of the cerebral cortex. Our computerized, two-stage flattening method takes as its input any well-defined representation of a surface within the three-dimensional cortex. The first stage rapidly converts this surface to a topologically correct two-dimensional map, without regard for the amount of distortion introduced. The second st...

What Do Focus Maps Focus On?

Maps are an important, everyday medium to communicate spatial information. We are faced with a great variety of different maps used for different purposes. While many of these maps are task-specific and concentrate on specific pieces of information, often they do not support map reading to extract the information relevant for the task at hand. In this paper, we explore the concept of focus maps...
